About Seafarer

Seafarer is an independent financial systems engineering practice focused on automation and AI-assisted systems for accounting and finance teams.

Founder

Seafarer was founded by an accounting and financial systems automation specialist whose work sits at the intersection of accounting operations and software engineering.

After beginning a career in accounting, much of this work naturally evolved toward improving the reliability and efficiency of complex financial workflows. Repetitive manual processes and fragile spreadsheet systems created opportunities for automation, leading to the development of increasingly sophisticated systems designed to streamline financial operations.

What began as targeted Excel and VBA automation gradually expanded into building larger systems using Python and modern software development practices. Over time this work included designing reconciliation engines, financial data transformation pipelines, and close automation tools used within production accounting environments.

Alongside this engineering work, ongoing study of modern machine learning and AI technologies eventually led to the incorporation of AI-assisted capabilities into structured automation workflows, allowing complex financial processes to incorporate modern AI systems where appropriate.

Because these systems were originally developed while working inside accounting environments, they are designed around the realities of financial operations rather than theoretical automation models.

This combination of accounting domain expertise and engineering capability allows Seafarer to design automation systems that align with how finance teams actually operate—building reliable systems around real financial workflows rather than forcing accounting teams to adapt their processes to generic tools.

Professional Focus

Seafarer focuses on building durable automation systems for financial operations. These systems are designed to reduce manual effort, improve reliability, and create structured workflows around complex accounting processes.

Areas of work typically include:

Financial Workflow Automation

Designing systems that automate repetitive accounting tasks such as reconciliations, data validation, reporting preparation, and close-related workflows.

Accounting Data Engineering

Transforming ERP and financial data into structured, reliable datasets suitable for analysis, reporting, and downstream automation.

Custom Financial Software Development

Building specialized tools and internal applications tailored to the operational needs of finance teams.

AI-Assisted Financial Automation

Integrating modern AI capabilities into structured financial workflows where appropriate, allowing systems to assist with tasks such as variance explanation, anomaly detection, and operational insight generation.

Range of Engagement

Seafarer works across a wide range of technical complexity depending on the needs of the organization.

Some engagements involve relatively lightweight automation—improving existing spreadsheet workflows, building targeted tools, or eliminating repetitive manual processes.

Other projects involve designing and building more comprehensive systems, such as custom financial applications, data pipelines that process ERP financial data and reporting exports, or AI-assisted automation platforms.

The goal is not to introduce unnecessary complexity, but to build the appropriate level of system for the problem at hand—ranging from simple automation to fully engineered financial workflow platforms.

Example Systems

Examples of systems typically built in this work include:

Automated Reconciliation Engines

Systems that ingest ERP exports and financial reporting data, normalize financial records, and perform automated reconciliation logic across entities, accounts, and reporting structures.

Variance Analysis and Explanation Systems

Systems that analyze financial movement between reporting periods, identify key drivers of change, and generate structured explanations for finance teams.

Financial Data Transformation Pipelines

Automation pipelines that extract, clean, and structure ERP financial data to support reporting, analytics, and operational workflows.

Close Process Automation Tools

Systems designed to reduce manual effort during the financial close by automating validation checks, report preparation, and cross-system comparisons.

AI-Assisted Financial Workflows

Structured automation systems that incorporate modern AI capabilities for tasks such as anomaly detection, financial narrative generation, and operational insight extraction.

Design Philosophy

Seafarer systems are designed to operate safely within existing financial environments.

Where possible, solutions work alongside existing ERP processes rather than requiring invasive system changes.
